An entire floor of patients didn't eat dinner, but at least we got an expired Starbucks coupon.

Unexpected Hunger Pangs

During my extended hospital stay, I experienced numerous instances of missed meals, which added an extra layer of stress to an already challenging situation. The hospital routine included scheduled meal deliveries, but there were several times when I found myself without a meal.

The MRI Ordeal

One particularly memorable incident involved a 6-hour journey for an MRI scan. By the time I returned from the extremely traumatic experience, it was long past the designated dinner ordering time. As I made my way back to my room, I noticed dinner trays being delivered to other patients. Despite my efforts to order a meal, and even having the head nurse call down to the kitchen, my dinner never arrived. Thankfully, I had a small stash of snacks to tide me over.

A Floor-Wide Fiasco

Another time, the entire floor was affected by a cafeteria mistake. Meal trays simply never showed up, leaving all the patients hungry and waiting. The nurses made their rounds around 9 pm to apologize for the oversight. While their heartfelt apologies were appreciated, it didn't fill the gnawing hunger. As a consolation, I was given a coupon for Starbucks in the gift shop. However, being on bed confinement meant that getting to the gift shop was not an option for me.

Reflections on Hospital Stays

These experiences taught me the importance of having a contingency plan during hospital stays. A small stash of snacks can be a lifesaver when meal deliveries go awry. Additionally, the support and empathy from the nursing staff were invaluable, even when the system failed. While these missed meals were frustrating at the time, they also highlighted the complexities and challenges that come with being a patient in a hospital setting.
