Decorating with Love and Memories

When my baby was in the NICU, I wanted to make his space feel as warm and comforting as possible. With the hospital staff's permission, I started by adding pictures and drawings his sister made to his area. I included photos of his sister, whom he had yet to meet, his grandparents, and even pictures of himself. While I knew he probably couldn't see them, it gave me a sense of peace that his room looked a little bit like home.

Having these familiar faces around made the NICU feel less clinical and more personal. It also gave me something to talk about while he was awake so he could hear my voice. I found that having a silly picture of his sister with a messy face from cooking reminded me of the good times in the past and the wonderful moments to come in the future.

Making the Most of Our Time Together

One of the ways we passed the time was by using a letterboard. I brought it from home and changed the quotes often. This simple task gave me something to focus on and zone out a bit, which was a nice break from the stress and worry. Plus, it made for some cute pictures that I could share with family and friends.

Every time I selected a new quote, it was an opportunity to think about something positive or funny. It became a little ritual that brought a sense of normalcy and joy to our days in the NICU. Even though my baby couldn't read the quotes, I believe he could feel the love and care behind each one.

(Don't worry, the letterboard was only in this spot for a few picture taking seconds and was quickly relocated to the counter).

Finding Peace in Small Things

The experience of having a baby in the NICU is incredibly challenging, but finding small ways to personalize the space made a big difference for me. It gave me things to talk about with my baby, brought a sense of home to the sterile environment, and provided a creative outlet during a stressful time. Decorating his area with pictures and using the letterboard were small acts that brought immense comfort and peace.

Looking back, I'm grateful for those moments of connection and the little touches that made the NICU feel less intimidating. They were simple yet powerful ways to show my love and care for my baby, even in the most trying circumstances.
